While doing this, it will interpret signs that have a special meaning for the shell, like *, which is used to refer to all files in the current directory. To prevent the shell from doing this (so that the special character can be interpreted by something else, for example by the command you are using), you should tell the shell not to interpret the special characters. You can do this by escaping them using any of three methods. If it is just one character that you don't want interpreted, put a \ in front of it. If it is a series of characters that you don't want interpreted, put them between single quotes. If it is a string that contains certain elements that you do want to be interpreted, use double quotes. Between double quotes, many special signs like * and $ are still interpreted. 7 deals with shell scripting and you ll find more details there.

The first step before installing Ubuntu alongside Windows is to check how much free space you have in your Windows partition. To see the amount of free space you have under Windows Vista or 7, click the Start button, click Computer, and look at the bar graph next to your hard disk drive, as shown in Figure 3-2. With older versions of Windows, you should double-click My Computer, right-click your boot drive, and select Properties. The free space is usually indicated in purple on a pie chart. In both cases, look for how much free space you have. In Windows Vista and 7, this is the first figure underneath the bar graph. You need to have at least 3GB of free space in your Windows partition for Ubuntu to use, but 3GB is a bare minimum and should be considered only if you have no other choice (that is, your computer lacks free disk space). You ll need more space than that if you wish to install a lot of programs. If you don t have enough free space, you have several options: reclaim space, remove Windows, or use a second hard disk.

Another way of locating files is by the name of the user who created the file The command find / -user "alex" will find all files created by user alex The fun thing about find is that you can execute a command on the result of the find command by using the -exec option For example, if you want to copy all files of user alex to the directory /groups/sales, use find / -user "alex" -exec cp {} /groups/sales \; In such a command, you should pay attention to two specific elements First is the {} construction, which is used to refer to the result of the find command that you ve started with Next is the \; element, which is used to tell find that this is the end of the part that began with -exec.

In Windows 7, Vista, and XP, you can run the Disk Cleanup tool to free some space on your hard disk. Under Windows 7 and Vista, click Start Computer and right-click the icon representing your hard disk. Select Properties from the menu that appears and then click the Disk Cleanup button. On Windows XP, click the Disk Cleanup button beneath the pie chart showing the free disk space. Disk Cleanup is also accessible by clicking Start All Programs Accessories System Tools Disk Cleanup.

Listing 11-19 asks for a row from the Entry table where TourID simultaneously has two different values. This never happens, and so no rows are retrieved. The cure is to use a self join (covered in 5) or an intersection operation (covered in 7). Getting no rows returned from a query may also be an extreme example of one of the problems in the next section.
