In the previous sections, we looked at some problems you could possibly find with database design and inconsistent data. Most of the time, however, if the result of your query is not looking quite right, it is probably because you have the wrong SQL statement. Your statement may be retrieving rows that are different from what you were expecting. We looked at checking the query output in 10. I cannot overemphasize the importance of checking your query results, as sometimes two queries may be subtly different, and it can be tricky to spot if you have mistakenly asked the wrong question. In the previous chapter, I suggested a way to approach queries that lets you build the query up slowly so you can check that each step is returning appropriate rows. However, if you are presented with a full-blown, complex query that is not delivering as expected, you need to pare it down until you find where the problem lies. If you have noticed a problem, then you have a good place to start. You have either noticed an expected row is missing or that an inappropriate row has been retrieved. Concentrate on finding where in the query that problem is. The following sections offer some suggestions.

Caution When using virtualization, it s a very good idea to differentiate between the host operating system and the others. The host operating system is the first operating system that your server boots. It also has some very specific responsibilities for the other operating systems, such as managing access to drivers and managing the virtual machines themselves. To make sure that it can perform these tasks in the most efficient way, don t run any services (other than virtualization services) in the host operating system!

Perform the following steps to set up your server for virtualization (the procedure described here is supported on Ubuntu Server 7.04 and later): 1. Install all software necessary (the KVM and QEMU packages) for KVM virtualization. As root, use the command apt-get install kvm qemu. 2. After installing these software packages, make sure that the required drivers are loaded. As root, use modprobe kvm-intel if you re using an Intel CPU, or use modprobe kvm-amd if you have an AMD CPU.

Note It might happen someday that you want to cancel your Ubuntu One subscription. If you do, the information will be deleted from Ubuntu One, but not from your computer. If you have a free plan it will be deleted immediately, whereas a paid subscription will remain active until the end of the current billing period.

Where you have one query nested inside another, the first thing to check is that the nested part is behaving itself. Take a look at Listing 11-17.

Another kind of information that you can synchronize with Ubuntu One is Tomboy Notes. Tomboy is an application that allows you to take notes, which comes installed by default in Lucid Lynx. Each note consists of a title and a body. To configure the application follow these steps: 1. 2. 3. Access the Tomboy Notes application, available in Applications Accessories.

Notice that a web page opens in your default browser. You will be prompted to log in to Launchpad and authorize your computer, just as you do when synchronizing files. If login and authorization are successful, you will receive a message telling you so. Go back to Tomboy and click Save to start synchronizing notes.

From that point onwards, your notes will be synchronized to Ubuntu One, and from there to any other computers that you configure with the same Launchpad account. You can force synchronization by expanding the Tools menu and choosing the option Synchronize Notes.
