Chances are your PC already has Windows installed on it. This won t present a problem. In most cases, Ubuntu can live happily alongside Windows in what s called a dual-boot setup, which enables you to choose which operating system to run at your computer s startup. However, installing Ubuntu means that Windows must make certain compromises. Windows is forced to cohabit on your hard disk with another OS something it isn t designed to do.

Note Even if you intend to install Ubuntu on a completely blank hard disk, it s still important that you understand partitioning.

Now at least you can do something with your MySQL server. By the way, it s not a very secure idea to type the root password for your database server in clear text on the command line like this. You can also use the option -p to have mysqladmin prompt for a password: mysqladmin -u root -p password Next, your server will ask for you to input a password twice.

The main issue with such a situation is that Windows needs to shrink and make some space available for Ubuntu (unless you install a second hard disk, which is discussed later in this chapter). In an ideal world, Ubuntu needs its own separately defined part of the disk, which is referred to as a partition. All of this can be handled automatically by the Ubuntu installation routine, but it s important that you know what happens so that you know what to do in the unlikely event of anything going wrong.

Another task that a Linux administrator has to occasionally perform is to create a database. You will sometimes install applications that want to use a MySQL database, and, to use such applications, you need to create that database first. To do this, you ll use the mysqladmin command again. In the following example, you ll create a database with the name DBASE1: mysqladmin -p create DBASE1sudo Normally, this is where your responsibilities as a Linux administrator end. The rest of the work on MySQL involves creating tables and populating the database with data, which is typical work for the database administrator and so is not covered here.

Note It s possible to install Ubuntu within the Windows file system too, as an alternative to dual-booting. That s explained in 4.

Even with a well-designed database, we still have the issue of the accuracy of the data that has been entered. As the query designer, you can t be held responsible for some accuracy problems. If a person s address has been entered incorrectly, there is not much anyone can do to find or fix the problem (apart from waiting for the mail to be returned to sender). However, you can be aware of a number of things, and even if you can t fix the problems, you can at least raise some alarms. In addition, it is sometimes possible to fix some problem data with careful use of update queries.

All hard disks are split into partitions, which are large chunks of the disk created to hold operating systems and data (just as a large farm is partitioned into separate fields). A partition is usually multiple gigabytes in size, although it can be smaller.

FTP is another service that s quite popular on the web. It s popular because it makes sharing files so easy, and you can use several FTP servers on Ubuntu Server. One of the easiest and fastest of these is pure-ftpd. Let s have a look at how to set it up, but (as usual!) first make sure that it s installed: use the apt-get install pure-ftpd command, which also automatically starts the pure-ftpd server using its default settings.
